Rather than 'defund' the police we need to de-militarize the police. They need funds for appropriate training on de-escalation and safe take down/ restraint as well as collaboration with community resources such as mobile crisis response teams.
De Blasio says just now that police budget resources will be shifted to "youth services." He avoids the term defunding, but this certainly hints in that direction. Let's see. He also says police will be taken off of street vendor enforcement.
