Credit to the late Colin Leakey: hodmedods.co.uk/blogs/news/col β€œHodmedod’s canned Red Haricot Beans are the Stop variety of Phaseolus vulgaris bean bred by Colin for suitability for production in the UK.” Colin wanted to call it the fartless bean.

This🧡flags v imp Qs for the future of farming. We need to support farmers to develop & share seed diversity, for food to adapt to climate change. But seed laws & public funds tend to support agribusiness corps to develop just a few varieties & to fiercely guard IPRs & profits.

But we have a system of legislation around seed & intellectual property that, though originally intended to protect farmers & plant breeders, now cedes excessive control to corporations &, we believe, stands in the way of the adaptive, agroecological systems we do urgently need.

Here’s the big Q for Warwick Uni: These beans look brilliant, but no work has been done with the genetics for at least 5 years (probably longer - they’re registered varieties) & public money paid for that breeding work. That being so, why aren’t the seeds widely available?
