We’ve sure slid down the slope from “protect to vulnerable” to “the vulnerable need to protect themselves” to “the vulnerable are the danger” in record time.

The place I spent a good deal of my childhood (Stockton) was/is a central location in this dynamic. A whole section of town called Okietown. Also a good place to look to understand how CA's special flavor of Sheriffs team up with farmers politically.

one thing i find a lot about when people talk about the 60s and the civil rights movement is their brain just forgets the whole 'churches being bombed' and 'national guard had to be used to protect ruby bridges' bits, among others

Older but still valuable is Richard Hofstadter's introductory essay to American Violence (1970):
"What is most exceptional about the Americans is...their extraordinary ability to persuade themselves...that they are among the best-behaved and best-regulated of peoples.”

The crew and I were tired because the film was under-budgeted, which is typical for my movies since there’s often an African-American protagonist. I’m usually shooting 4 to 5 scenes a day with a shorter schedule.

Thank you for talking about this. Very few know. My dad avoided getting medicaid for this reason. As a legally blind amputee with a kidney transplant he needed the coverage but also didn't want to sacrifice his home. Professionals who refer you to sign up never mention it

Medicaid clawback plus a number of states that have “filial responsibility” laws. In a country where long term care is unaffordable & largely owned by predatory venture capital, Medicaid’s actions to “recoup” plus these laws are outrageous

I enjoyed Quantumania, but the cheery, fun-to-watch friends of Scott are removed entirely, not even mentioned. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfiefer move from interesting background characters to middle-of-the-action players, and the daughter, as well.
Everyone else is a toy.

I clicked a link on Twitter and got the error "Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint".
I guess this means Twitter is so desperate for cash that it started charging Twitter for API access to Twitter, but Twitter couldn't pay for it.

Wow. A thread of +20 historical tweets that claim to explain what is happening in Israel without so much as a mention of the occupation or Palestinians, the native population. 🤦🏽♂️

1/ THREAD: Israel is currently undergoing a period of revolutionary change, and the pace of events can be difficult to keep up with, even for those residing and working here. Let me attempt to clarify some of the developments we are witnessing.

Hey so remember how I turned down an ambulance after a three-lane car wreck into a sign, a tree, & a concrete wall b/c I couldn’t afford it?
Guess who just got a bill for $150 for refusing transport

Boy it really sucks here in the US that my 1st thought after a major car accident is “I can’t afford an ambulance”

I will ask my able-bodied and healthy CA friends to please do me this favor: write a complaint at the link below, and help us keep masks in medical facilities, the most unavoidable places for the high-risk people in your lives.

This was always the purpose of inventing "organized retail theft." The term implies hierarchy and premeditation, and distracts people from the fact that shoplifting has a tiny footprint and is overwhelmingly a crime of poverty.

because of the fake retail theft panic, virginia has created a new habitual shoplifter offense. it's a class 3 felony, which puts it on par with the crime of shooting or stabbing someone with the intent to kill or grievously harm. fox5dc.com/news/virginia-
