    Freakonomics has a new episode about our Uber apology field experiment with 1.5 million riders with John List, and Ian Muir: apologies work but you have to pay for them (still haven't listened, kinda terrified to hear my own voice).

    I don’t know if this is a controversial take, an obvious take or both. But I have a position on econometrics curriculum I’d like to verbalize. I believe causal inference should be taught before econometrics, not after, and here’s why. 1/n

    Very happy to post paper with , analyzing clustered standard errors (SEs) in paired and small strata . Main takeaway is you need to cluster SEs at pair/strata level. Failing to do so may lead to over-rejection, if reg has pair/strata FEs. 👇Thread 1/

    I would like to think I target the median. That's what my research says I should do. But I've just finished grading my course and realize that it's actually around the 70th percentile 😕

    Great article trying to define what we mean by equality. We all agree when we say we dislike inequality but we don’t agree on what equality is.

    TIL average human body temp in the US is 97.9°F, not 98.6°F (37°C). Body temp has been falling for decades, probably because we get fewer infections now so our immune system has become less active.

    A unilateralist's curse-like case: if many altruists decide independently when to start ethics and policy work on a future technology, large investments will be made (by the overoptimists) much too early even if the average altruist is too pessimistic.

    Agreed. Economists think we are so clever when we identify potential for moral hazard and asymmetric information but empirically those factors don’t seem to matter so much in real world. The aca is a good reminder for more economist humility.

    Two brave young scientists just did the unthinkable: they bypassed the IPCC and made our climate forecasts better. They input the STPS (middle of the road) energy scenario into climate models. This shows we are heading for 2.7-3C of warming. (thread)

    1/ Quick expost livetweet of Bertrand’s Ely lecture on “Gender in XXIst century” Begins by underlining that all indicators are pointing in right direction : higher girl schooling, lower pay gaps (14% on average), slow rise of ♀ in upper part of earning distributions

    Love this. In college I seriously considered being a typographer. Though was more interested in the wonder of how word adjusts ligatures/kerning [ie how space between letters varies (how like the ‘a ‘is moved under the bar of the ‘T’ in Table)] more than dash size.

    On the first day of 2020, I'd like to give you all a gift. It's on hyphens, dashes, and minus signs. Some of you will balk at this ("Why should I care about these trivialities?!"). But we are professional writers, and our documents—I believe—should look polished.

    i guess what i would have liked is something more like.. a[0] = "meow" a[1] = "moo" b[0] = "cat" b[1] = "cow" for i = 0 to len(a) display a[i] + " says " + b[i] and the ability to escape special characters with something like.. a[0] = "meow == \"cat\""
