It’s probably very obvious, but how do you navigate through the ice? Do you use radar/sonar or helicopter for visual routings?

We use a lot of satellite images and we also have UAVs to scout if we need to but most of the time we use our ice radar and a pair of binoculars!

It's truly beautiful and to be honest, photos and video don't do it justice. It really is a privilege to be here! Happy New year to you too from all of us on board.

How many knots do you travel when breaking through the ice?

-
Hi Anne. It all depends how thick the ice is. If it's thin (up to 50cm or so) we go up to 8 knots. The thicker it gets the slower we go. At the moment we're averaging about 3-4 knots. But that's not in a straight line as we have to go round icebergs and the really thick bits.

Would also be interesting to know the maximum thickness of ice you can get through?
