Look at what's getting cached. Caching in the middle of the stack is a red flag. *Except in special cases* caching should be done at the edge (via the proxy providing ingress). Caching in the middle is hidden state and a hidden source of downtime.

You'll see this very visibly when you get to a part of the stack that has many different branches and merges the results. You might even see the same data coming from different sources.

The most common patterns come from teams having deep knowledge of one part of the stack but a gap in knowledge across systems.

There's a simple fix for this one, give engineering final say on tech debt. When a company hits maturity the bigger risk is having to rewrite the whole thing rather than not ship enough features. Most of the time those deadlines are artificial.
