My Women in Computing History class students are improving some history of computing pages this week. And so many of their well-thought-out and useful edits are getting reverted. One student added a quote and reference from Janet Abbate’s award-winning book Recoding Gender...

Prof. Abbate is a prominent expert on women in computing who has done more oral history interviews with early women in computing than most other researchers. Her books have won awards. She is well known.

A dude came by the next day and removed the book citation and quote claiming it was “from an unreliable source” and stated Abbate didn’t know what she was talking about. Other changes on other pages were similarly reverted for fake/bs reasons.

So my students are unfortunately getting a real-time lesson in how structural discrimination works in knowledge production🙃

Can you give the link of one of the pages so the Admins can investigate / revert?

Thanks, but it’s a structural problem and I don’t trust Wikipedia to fix the informational mess it continues to make year after year. And which it’s heavily invested in replicating and scaling.

Sorry to hear. Do you have any editors to help, via @WikiEducation or elsewhere? If it would be helpful to have another set of eyes or do some reverting, lmk. But I like your approach to make the process part of the pedagogy!

And to talk about how wikipedia experience, while certainly skilled work, is orthogonal to academic and subject experience, and they are not nec recognized by each other -- even tho wp epistemology rests on traditional publication

As a former admin in a smaller Wikipedia, I would talk about this - besides raising the topic on the article talk page, adding links to Janet Abbate wiki article in the citation and calling out the bias at the relevant talk pages
