just to note: this data is from several years ago--it may well have gotten worse. I'd like to say it might've gotten better, but I'd be surprised if that were the case.

If these stats disturb you, please also take a few minutes to read this heart rending essay about the human face of this crisis (disproportionately black, queer, & women) and what results when workers are not given the protections they should have by law: https://twitter.com/histoftech/status/1115323558933221377?s=21 …pic.twitter.com/4BrwtOpTzj

As the article screenshots on that last tweet show, this is--like so many other problems in our society--something that disproportionately negatively affects people of color. It is yet another clear example of the fiction of meritocracy & "bootstraps"--the goalposts always move.

I adjuncted for years in grad school to pay my bills, & then for 3 more years after graduating into the recession of 2008/9. I loved teaching but the pay & work conditions made these some of the hardest years of my life. I lost a tooth bc I did not have money for a root canal.

And without shifting focus away from the workers, I think you can also see how horrible this is for higher ed: professors don't just teach, we do research. That's where the stuff we teach comes from! We all share our research knowledge & teach using each other's research results.

No time for research means no new knowledge to teach. The corporate university eats itself as it extracts value from researchers who aren't paid enough to do anything other than teach. Imagine all the unwritten books, all the knowledge we lose as a result. And which knowledge.

Why talk about the presidents of the universities? If they are doing their job, they are paying for their salary through donations and other income that they generate. Let's talk about coaches that earn north of 10x the president's salary. Agree about exploitation of adjuncts.
