Enjoyed listening to the episode, thanks for making it :) Could it be, that public open-source projects are in fact R&D projects that are independent from corporate and academia? I guess the collaboration model could be improved but afaik money is not the main driver of OSS.

I would like to think that, if you share your idea and explain your vision you will get people who are very interested to contribute. The only catch is that you need to manage their efforts. Or at least this is my experience with smaller community-driven projects.
