What kind of jail time should people get for using heroin? Do you think that will help them stop using? Do you think it's currently deterring anyone? Do we want to ruin people's lives with traumatizing incarceration in order to "help" them not use a drug that they want to use?

Why is it up to anyone else to tell people what they can and can't do with their own bodies, anyway? Skiing is fun, but it can be very dangerous, even lethal. Should we make it illegal to protect people from themselves? Even sticking with drugs, what about alcohol? Tobacco?

Humans have been using drugs for tens of thousands of years. We've been trying to stamp them out using state force for a few decades. How well is that going? Drugs are purer and more available now than ever. The most heavily guarded places on earth, prisons, still have drugs.

Why do we think we can get rid of them in society at large? Isn't it time for a new approach? One that places the health and safety of ourselves and our communities first, and actually listens to the thousands of experts calling for drug legalization?

Keeping production criminalized just keeps drug production in the black market. We won't get rid of drugs, that reality has to be acknowledged. We've tried, it never works. Demand is here to stay, so drugs should be made under safe, regulated conditions. Full legalization.

Decriminalization is an important first step, but it doesn't solve the problem of a toxic, unregulated supply of drugs, which is the cause of the overdose crisis. Only legalization and regulation takes drug production away from organized crime and allows safe access for users.

I could also talk a lot about the racist origins & function of the War on Drugs (and do regularly in my work), but I wanted to keep this thread as accessible as possible. It's really important to understand though. Drug prohibition props up racist mass for-profit incarceration.

Global drug prohibition is intimately tied into imperialism and capitalism too. But you don't have to understand any of that to realize that the War on Drugs has failed to do anything but line certain people's pockets and devastate poor communities.

It can be really hard to imagine doing things differently. It's a big change; the feelings of resistance you probably have are normal! Drug war propaganda has convinced us that prohibition is the only possible way to deal with people's innate desire to alter our consciousness.

But drugs are already woven into every part of our society, so legalization will not increase access. It will just make drugs safer for those who choose to do them. It will save many, many lives and be so much more humane than what we have now. Please help us fight for it!
