I think it will be a mistake if the Dems make the Supreme Court politics narrowly about Roe v Wade. They need to make this moment about democracy itself—subsume reproductive choice under a mantle of democratic legitimacy and popular sovereignty.

I just want white women to pour all their outraged "I was told by Applecare, BBQ'ing without a permit, selling water without a permit, breathing while near whiteness" energy into combating the efforts to revert to a time before women could get credit in their own names.

Dems got "tough" on the border to appease GOP; it didn't work. Got "tough" on drugs, "tough" on crime, "tough" on terror; didn't work. Cracked down on welfare; didn't work. Designed climate policy around markets; didn't work. Enshrined private health insurance; didn't work.

This first part (“Quit trying to make us feel teary-eyed”) reminds me of what Arlie Hochschild found in Strangers in Their Own Land: many Tea Party (and now Trump) folks see government/media as coercing emotions to manipulate policies — and they don’t like it.

This is powerful but does't work for me. It implies there are protective, almost maternal, spaces for these children. In reality, those children have been imprisoned and abused under the guise of reasserting American (white) power. Lady Liberty isn't protecting any of them.
