  1. Imagine if we all did the deep work to understand what weight stigma looks like & how we are actively contributing, engaged in convos about how to make our environments less stigmatizing, & frequently reflected on our own (explicit or implicit) weight bias. We have to do better.

  2. Yep, treating people kindly and fairly, sans discrimination, could improve health more than that trendy smoothie. We are focused on demonizing sugar (despite lack of quality research), when we should be reducing stigma in our own healthcare settings.

  3. Research has also shown that the health risks of weight stigma are a greater risk to our overall health than “poor-quality dietary patterns.” (Vadiveloo & Mattei, 2017).

  10. A fully fed body = mental clarity, energy, ease, presence, & joy. Life is so much more challenging when you're underfed. When you're going against a voice that says you are better off eating less, you have to be brave & give it the middle finger bc you don’t got time for that.

  13. Healthy relationship with food: - If adequate access to food, routinely honor hunger/fullness cues w/o judgement/shame/guilt. - No dieting or restrictive behaviors. - Can use food to sooth, & have additional coping skills to manage emotions. - If able, engage in joyful movement.

  14. Eating to control body size reinforces the idea that thinness is better and that if we work hard enough everyone can be thin. The truth is that there are all sizes and shapes of bodies and everyone has their own genetically, predetermined weight. Thinner ≠ worthier/healthier

  15. In exploring these questions for yourself, you have the opportunity to making eating about honoring your body & enjoyment, instead of fear & distrust. It’s widely believed that controlling your food will control your body, however, the result is fearing food and chaotic eating.

Straddling the fence with a is harmful to everyone. To your business, to your audience, and most importantly, to the people who are harmed by diet culture in the first place

  19. What is the alternative? Intuitive eating, which is just normal or regular eating. It’s our default factory setting, or what our body is genetically wired for.

  20. Dieting is any change to eating patterns or physical activity with the primary intention of changing body weight or shape, which ironically moves wellbeing to the back burner. Diet culture’s agenda: $$, uphold beauty ideals, & is a belief system that is inherently fatphobic.
