This is for sure true. Doesn't mean you have to make that choice if you don't want to go big for other reasons, but the time commitment is pretty much the same (which for most people will be all of your time

Hmmm. Are you really working 100 hours a week? With Transistor I’ve rarely worked over 40. (And most weeks it’s a lot less)

First 4 years or so I def worked over 60hrs a week, 6-7 days a week. That minimum. My wife would estimate it higher.

Programming wise things are so much easier now.

I would estimate I worked 50-60 hour weeks to start Honeybadger in 2012, including a 40 hours/week freelance business. Maybe a little more some weeks. Had 2 partners contribute about the same afaik.

I know a handful of other founders who started with 25 hours a week, and admit (in private) that they still don’t work much more than that. 100 hours/week is definitely not necessary. It seems that 40 hour weeks should be plenty for most founders (especially once they’re est.)

Yeah, we’re on the same page. That’s pretty much us. Once we could replace freelance income, we shifted from freelancing to running the business and didn’t continue the extra time. We now work 30 hour weeks. (Company policy.)

(In case it wasn’t clear: my estimate was 50-60 hours including a full time job initially. So 10-20 hours/week to start the business.)
