I get a lot of emails asking how I get to work with the clients/companies I do, and the tone of these emails is always vaguely "I'm just as good as you, why don't I have what you have", and I wish I had a more satisfying answer than "I got extremely lucky" but.. that's the truth

Anyway I guess my blanket advice if you're feeling like you aren't getting what you deserve, career-wise, is to be ready for the tide to turn on a dime, and to foster good relationships with your contemporaries and peers rather than passive-aggressively emailing strangers.

And if that stranger happens to email you back requesting you include a portfolio or some examples of your work so they can give you specific advice and/or leads, don't.... just.... not respond............ thank u

The luck factor is 100% a thing. I've also experienced it. Big player in my imposter syndrome despite nearly a decade of continued contact and gig offers by my big clients. Sometimes lick and timing really play into things.

Luck is essential, yes. But you also need to be ready when the opportunities come along, which is where the ability and drive come in.

Exactly what Jody said. I never hide the role that pure luck played in my career. But I think even more important was that when my lucky shot came I was primed and ready with the skills and drives to take advantage of the door luck cracked open.

I've also found that many fantastic artists are just horrible with marketing and networking. The business side of things isn't always fun, but there's a pretty firm cap on artistic skill, and without getting the right things in front of the right people, skill alone falls flat.
