I was writing a thing & word kept telling me I was spelling naphthalene incorrectly. I usually shrug off word spell check when writing chemical names, but figured word probably knows this chemical bc naphthalene = moth balls. I had never realized naphthalene had a ph in it!

Mine's more like "naf-tuh-leen", as I certainly don't do the "th". In Spanish we say "naftaleno" and that's how I learned the word. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "nap-thuh-leen". Or I've erased it to prevent trauma, lol.

My opinion is that it is pronounced however you like. I had a couple chemistry words and non chemistry words I like to purposely mispronounce and no one ever says anything. Now they may be thinking something...

I say something more like “napf-tha-leen”. It doesn’t roll of the tongue that’s for sure.
