Pronounced like “fortune” in Chinese, the bat has been one of the most revered, popular creatures in East Asia for over 1000 years. Here, red bats surrounding a dragon on a Qing emperor’s robe, blue bats on a Korean vase of Choson dynasty, a black bat in a Japanese ukiyo-e print.

Looking for a particular image I found another one - and it reminds me what bizarre things happen in The Stone Dance of the Chameleon! Is it too late to petition for an illustrated edition? Or a Part 8 with notes & drawings?

When I first read the books in their original form, they were clearly relevant to real-world power relations, prejudices and environmental destruction. Now, even moreso. And that literal wall around the privileged world... art both imitates and anticipates reality.

Considering how many children’s minds may have been at least partially formed by classical LEGO, is it fanciful to suppose that this had something to do with the advent of the digital revolution that occurred when they grew up?

Hi all. Finally getting close to publishing a new book so I thought I'd share the cover! It's fantasy but it's not 'epic fantasy' like Battle Mage. This is more like the pilot episode of a new TV series. Let me introduce you to 'Fate'

Pictures of from Li Ling's book Reading Persia (2019). They're monuments of the Achaemenid Empire, the first Silk-Road empire in history founded by Cyrus the Great, in whose footsteps followed Alexander, Ashoka, and Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China.

Since it's a day for transphobic nastiness on Twitter (must be a day with a Y in it) let me make my position clear. Trans rights are human rights. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. I know enough trans people to know this. Not going to argue, I block bigotry as routine.

The robe Empress Dowager Cixi wears in the painting on the right appears at an auction recently. It bears the so-called 12 symbols of imperial sovereignty, reserved almost only for emperors, but fitting for her role as de facto ruler of Qing China for nearly 30 years till 1908.
