what if public libraries were open late every night and we could engage in public life there instead of having to choose between drinking at the bar and domestic isolation

agreed! and individualism has been baked into our commutes and working schedules in ways that’s very hard to overcome

An example: parks are also public spaces. In China, people self organize exercise groups, dance and taichi classes for all ages after dark. It's bustling with families. Compare that with North America where parks are dead quiet and even dangerous after dark.

Well, maybe. But we've gone so far into isolation I think people are hungry for community. That's why bars are doing trivia nights and old-fashioned games. We need more non-alcohol-focused places to gather. (Oh, consider swing dancing or other social dance. Such fun!)

There's an egocentric problem at play here to. People here have gotten to this weird point where the entirety of our identities are external and anyone that dislikes something the other likes it is taken as a personal attack rather than a difference in opinion or preferences.

It's like everything is slowly becoming a taboo point of discussion the level of discussing politics or religion. It's problematic to say the very least.

This can't be correct. First, Western societies have dramatically changed. And material facts changed them. Some cities have many more open public events & people usually FLOCK to them. Summer movies, plays in the park. The suburbs and rural areas can get more isolated, depending

I think this gets to the core of the issue - the physical nature of our environment and cities influence our behavior. Of course isolation isn't going to be solved with libraries open later. But I don't think it's right to blame culture.
@StrongTowns should chime in
