That's the thing about Scruton, he so often falls foul of the "Does the opposite of this statement sound equally true?" test.

When conflicts arise, do you feel comfortable appealing to an authority? We know college students answer that one in the affirmative!

Better questions would be: When you initiate an interaction with a stranger, can you be confident their response will be within a range you consider appropriate? In commercial interactions, how cagey do you feel the need to be in order to avoid being cheated?

"Trust" has many meanings --- which is why it was so surprising to me to learn that social science mostly quantifies trust just by surveying the question "Can you trust most people?"

It shouldn’t surprise us that a class of people for whom meritocracy has ensured a seamless transition from one high trust environment to another throughout their entire lives have no idea the way people negotiate in real life.

Noah’s analysis is a politically oblivious and hateful way of saying that human culture is a myth and “assimilation” is not a historically observed fact but a racist conspiracy theory

I did not know that L.E. Sissman published an essay collection, or that his extensive vocabulary came from having been a spelling bee champion.

Imperial theory is all about how to manage diversity! You've got people who differ in fundamental ways; can they live together while preserving their respective cultures? Is commitment to a shared idea enough, or are the nationalists right that you need a shared identity? Etc.

Without getting into the merits of this particular attack, I'll just note that the increasing hostility to empire on the left runs oddly contrary to so many other trends in modern liberalism.

The rise of the novel was the most consequential revolution in what it means to be a person between the Reformation and Sigmund Freud. What if its effects were actually bad?
