Hmm. Doesn't work if you have gas central heating and your home is rented. Even with a grant, there are landlords who can't be bothered. It would have to be made law, but even then, loads cba. Landlords have all the power, tenants don't.

One suspects the bank holiday is less to do with England winning and more to do with shoring up support for the widely derided "freedom day". Lots of pictures of "happy families enjoying their new found freedom." Unless it rains of course.

What worries me is the government is being fed a lot of snake oil about the viability of things like electric heat pumps as a viable alternative to gas heating. The idea you could retrofit them into a standard three bed semi is a complete non-starter. We’d all freeze to death.

Citation? I worked as senior Technology Partner on the Building Research Establishment’s Innovation Park. I’ve seen first-hand how efficient heat pumps are. I’m sure there are situations they won’t fit, but the more installations we have, the lower UK’s carbon emissions will be.
