This is an over-simplification of a complex problem underpinned by broader systemic issues. But I was compelled to write it because the disparity between the rates is huge. An example: Female marketing lead asking for £375/day and male marketing lead asking for £795/day.

FYI this is my experience hiring in tech - UX, affiliate management, marketing lead, designers. And for transparency, I am an expert marketer and I bill £100 - £150 an hour.

For those asking about how I have approached this personally: I had been fearful that telling a female freelancer to charge more might be considered intrusive or patronising. I *have* done it, but rarely. Now I will do it every time.

I will hire the best people for the job. I have told some freelancers they are undercharging and I am also transparent about what I earn. BUT it's difficult for me to navigate directly asking them to charge more.

The problem is most clients telling us consistently that we're too expensive whilst hiring those men at double rates.
