We are a group of Pokémon fans aiming to share, investigate, and preserve lost/obscured Pokémon media, including prototypes, development, designs, and code.
"At GAME FREAK, in order to solve various issues faced as the scale of development expanded, we began testing the introduction of a public cloud environment in stages from the development of SWSH, and achieved full-scale implementation during the development of Pokémon Legends."
here's your PSA to not solely listen to Poketubers, niche micro-celebrities or any Twitter user with a lot of followers on the subject (myself included)
I'm just making people aware, go research yourself as opposed to being fed info by people that haven't even attempted gamedev
Some nights I just look through the sources in odd places, just to make sure we all didn't miss anything.
Sometimes I see something interesting, check to see what it is elsewhere, and then double check to make sure it is interesting.
It is definitely interesting.
Notice anything different about Raichu? Its pointing towards slot 175 as an evolution, a design that definitely has the same rounded head shape as the Pikachu line with several features described in that interview. There's no chance this thing isn't Gorochu.
Some people are still slightly confused as to how we know for sure Gorochu is MONSB175.DAT, so here's how:
If you're familiar with pokered, the file "evos_moves.asm" contains every Pokemon evolution and their learnsets. This file is "SHINKA.DAT" in the source.
regales us with stories from his days struggling to decipher and translate jumbles of text from Terranigma and Pokémon as well as working for EGM and GamePro. What could you write with 18 characters? Listen here: https://gamehistory.org/ep-74-pokemons-translator-nob-ogasawara/…
Probably ancient news at this point, but it appears that the Player's Room has two unused "carpet" styles that are still loaded into the final game. Guessing these weren't fully implemented because it didn't make sense to receive wood flooring via Mystery Gift:
Me after reading pokemon source code for 5 hours: what the FUCK is the hiden no sho? Why did scratch and razor wind trade sound effects? did you know the music and sounds are split into 3 separate banks and each one has both music and sound effects? Is it Mega Fire or Mega Flame?
Since the Cryptodex is almost to the end of Period One of Generation II's development, I decided to mock up the first part of a poster that summarizes my findings. I will add to this poster as we eventually go through all five periods of Gold and Silver's development.
Pokemon trios also used to follow these elements: Fire would have higher Atk, Water/Ice would have higher Def, and Electric would have higher Speed. They would also usually have the same Special stat, possibly a remnant of these original "types" being removed.
To add onto this: Special replaced Fire, Type1 replaced Water, and Type2 replaced Thunder in the Pokemon data (in the source anyway, this appears to be earlier). According to this, they were "resistances" so it's unclear if they behaved like Special or simply like Defense.
While the creation of the item indices may post-date documents referencing the three original elements, such as the early data structure document seen in the GI video, the old item names may be a holdover from a time when Fire/Ice/Electric was the only (?) type matchup system.
Note that the first three foods are grouped together, while the Leaf Stone is farther down in the item index. These three may have originally increased Fire/Ice/Electric elemental resistance stats, appearing right before the vitamin drinks.
A little tidbit for you today. According to USEITEM.DMG in the Blue source, four of the five elemental stones were originally "elemental" food items, mostly Japanese sweets. There's not enough information to really tell whether they were still evolution items at that time.
Alright, so yesterday's post was a joke... kinda, while today's is a game, can you spot the subtle differences between these two totally unclockable vignettes by Kagemaru Himeno? Published on the"Game Notebook" that came with the Nov '98 CoroCoro issue.

More accurate translation:
“In reality, they aren't fighting. Rather, the planet the game takes place on is a result of diastrophism, and people have passed down the legend that it was created by those two Pokémon.”
Addendum, the Groudon/Kyogre line may be referring to that people told the story that G/K created the land/sea, not that people directly created G/K by telling stories about them creating land/sea. Not totally sure what the definitive translation is though
are you positive about the translation of that last one...? i feel like it's saying that "it came to be said by people that these two creatures made them" in reference to the land and sea, and not that people invented the two creatures...
We felt this was worth a translation especially because of this end tidbit. The nature of some Pokemon being created from human imagination, culture, fear and even waste is an interesting topic!
Q. In the ancient past, what did Groudon and Kyogre fight over?
A. The truth is, they had never fought. The real star of the show was continental drift, and people made the two creatures to explain why it happened and the story was passed down.
That's all!
Q. Is it true that Champion Steven is the son of the Devon President Tsuwabuki?
A. He is absolutely the son. They both have a hobby of collecting rocks. The letter in Steven's house after beating the Elite Four is a hint towards this.
Q. After Groudon and Kyogre's anger was calmed, what happened to Team Magma and Aqua?
A. Having caused a natural disaster, they questioned in their hearts if they had made a mistake, and started on a journey somewhere.
Q. It seems that Gym Leader Flannery's grandpa is an Elite Four member, but who is he?
A. He doesn't appear in the game, nor is he in Kanto and Johto's Elite Four. It's because he was in an older Elite Four from a long time ago.
(Maybe this was retconned for Kabu?)
