How should I spec my character in Bloodborne? What's useful? Are i frames built into a stat like DS2 or DS3 poise?

Nothing matters. Death is all around me.

Your starting weapon matters more than your stats for a good minute

I chose the iconic one and I'm doing okay. For a while this mob of 6 was ganking me but I'm making my way towards what I believe to be Gascoigne.

The saw cleaver is good, I always choose the axe tho. Learn how to use your gun, and get a feel for the controls and it will become a beautiful dance.

I do not understand how the gun is so helpful that I'd use health to make ammo. I guess I'm not good enough to understand the flow yet. I'm doing a LOT of long rolls as opposed to small jukes.

Backstep and back roll are invaluable. There are hunter tools that use bullets to various effects and can be very powerful. What’s your psn username? I’ll add you

I’m going to sleep but if you get stuck on a boss I can help you.
