I was at a training workshop on Human-Wildlife Conflict in Tanzania & ready to apply what we learnt to the HWC situation in Zimbabwe. Most local communities want wildlife & know the importance of wildlife but they just DON'T WANT WILDLIFE IN THEIR BACKYARDS...like everyone else!

Metal sheets (foreground of pic) were banged by people to try to scare away wild animals. Did they work? Mixed reviews, but they're all people had. They did manage to wake me up on a number of occasions...🤔 if only that was a reliable index for village incursions by wildlife💤🐘

Many people felt animals were getting too close for comfort. Buffaloes (pictured <50m from someone's home) were mentioned by many - but after elephants - as a growing threat to people's lives and livelihoods since the ban in . Read:

Luckily there was no one inside it at the time but this building was also destroyed by an elephant - admittedly a while before this photo was taken so its dilapidation is also to do with degradation over time. Still lots of effort would have gone into it's construction.

I love elephants and feel lucky to have seen many during my life. But they are so destructive. Woke up terrified on fieldwork at midnight when one started breaking down some trees less than 50m from my room. Some people experience this all the time - blog:

Glad to hear have extended their consultation on import/exports to and from the UK. A complicated subject which could affect many people unlikely to know about (let alone contribute to) this consultation.

Did not expect to find this article while doing a systematic review: “Were human babies used as bait in crocodile hunts in colonial Sri Lanka.” Thank goodness times have changed!

“...complex situations require deeper understanding than social media posts and petitions provide”. Trophy hunting is indeed one of them! A worthwhile read if you think banning trophy hunting (or imports) is the answer.

I haven't seen an article that so clearly outlines how marketisation is poisoning British higher education. A depressing but necessary read. Via

How would 50% protected area coverage () affect resident people? Our new paper in shows that >1 billion people currently live in what would be PAs if all ecoregions reached 50%. Social impacts matter for targets

Am I the only one that had no idea we exported 50 tonnes of shark fins in 2017/18 and apparently "Hammerhead sharks were among the vulnerable varieties on offer in British outlets."?! Shocking read... (link: )

20 tonne tragedy. Dead elephant and pangolin parts discovered by Singapore inspectors. Just two days after the incident, authorities have gone public, scuppering investigative opportunities across the three countries implicated.

Three important questions answered re: trophy hunting ban in Botswana - Was it justifiable? What were its impacts? And what might happen now the ban is lifted?

How do we make high impact science that's cutting edge yet practical? In this new paper we learn from South African conservation planning & argue that structuring our communities under a post normal science paradigm can allow us to get the most out of both science and practice.

Such an interesting article on how Chinese informal/traditional money transfers are facilitating the illegal wildlife trade (and tax fraud).
