Looking forward to today’s discussion from 4-5pm GMT ! Particularly in light of the recent decision to ban trophy imports to U.K. Were communities near/in trophy hunting areas, who will be affected by the decision, consulted? …doubtful given the outcome 😐

A(nother) ranty thread! High profile media coverage of 'conservation' below.....but of a campaign, which I fear may ultimately do more harm than good in its approach (1/9)

Anyone know what these might be?! Caught in a scallop dredger in ~60m deep water in English Channel. Variety of suggestions so far including: giant barnacles, egg cases, ancient pottery, explosives, fossilised croissants! Can’t work until this mystery is solved so plz help :)

Great paper out: by and on some of the problems of global conservation priority maps, inc. exclusion of local knowledge, contexts & complexity, overlooked power dynamics, utility in decision making, more.

Arguments over alternatives to trophy hunting miss the fact that what conservation really needs is alternatives to reliance on the tourism/recreation sector. We need a new business model entirely.

In the age of the anthropocene, there’s not a single conservation problem that can be solved without people. is keen to hear from people from all backgrounds who can provide expert advice to help us better understand people for nature.

But also if elephants even survive the journey (sounds awfully stressful), how will they behave in the 'wild' after being so used to people? Were there any consultations with local people around these two 'sites in southern Kenya' being considered for their introduction?

So many concerning aspects about 's plan to *reintroduce* 13 captive-bred, UK-based, African elephants into the wild in Kenya. Most worrying- that the Kenyan Government wasn't informed! But also claims this will help elephant conservation... er, how exactly👀?

Trophy hunting is complicated. Decisions on it must be careful and collaborative, most importantly with input from local people. Here’s a recap of how it can help achieve outcomes, and some insights from communities impacted by a ban -

This blazing building is the University of Cape Town botany department. It housed the Bolus Herbarium, which was founded in 1826 and housed one of the most extensive collections of specimens and literature on S'African, and particularly, western cape, flora.

Heartbroken for my alma mater - the top building holds the rare books and special collections, inc. many important African works, bottom is biology. Can’t stop thinking about all the lost priceless books, samples and years of research. Just too sad and awful!

UK - students seem to have fallen down the cracks (as usual!) I used a hodge-podge of options which I *think* reflect what I do, but it's quite unsatisfying. I used the feedback option to explain the shortcomings - feel free to copy! Any thoughts? 1/5

Combining theory and evidence would increase impact of conservation interventions. But exactly how to combine them is not well outlined. We thus give a reproducible process for the when and how, & show why this combo is crucial for behaviour change. (1/6)
