    Others too show activity in vitro & in animal testing. Issue is: If any are proven to be active, what is the side-effect profile? How much of the drug is available? How quickly could production be scaled? If drugs are experimental, may not be tons available.

    Looking for some context on this report. Only in vitro, but potential progress?

    Because of the different ways the viruses spread. Viruses that spread through coughs & sneezes are much harder to control. That is not the way Ebola spreads.

    AT the moment, Ebola is facing more death than . How is possible a so different approach? why China is quarantined for a "flu"and africa is not for a "deadly virus? Could Coronavirus be more dangerous than Ebola? Events say so.

    7. I would imagine these data were shared with WHO during the discussion about whether the pregnant women in an outbreak should be offered access to vaccine. I hope they were shared with pregnant women in the field. But I can't understand why it took this long to publish.

    6. The miscarriage rate among women vaccinated against was not statistically different from the rate among a comparator group of unvaccinated women. That would be information pregnant women in an Ebola outbreak would want to know when making the choice about vaccine.

    5. It's about 84 pregnant women who were inadvertently enrolled in a vaccine trial in Sierra Leone. They didn't know they were pregnant or became pregnant within 60 days of being vaccinated. It's not spelled out in words in the abstract but here's what they found....

    4. Today a journal published a paper on use of the vaccine in pregnant women. Not from the ongoing outbreak, but data collected during the West African outbreak of 2014-2016. So data that have been around for several years now.

    3. Some researchers & ethicists pushed on the issue & eventually a decision was made to offer pregnant women who had been in contact with an case the opportunity to be vaccinated, if they wanted to be. It took months though.

    2. The fatality rate when pregnant women contract is v/ high; most lose their pregnancy & their lives. The concern was that the vaccine had never been tested in pregnant women; most aren't. People know they should be but those studies often don't get done.

    1. thread: In the fall of 2018 when the North Kivu outbreak was really taking off, there was a big debate about whether it was ethical to offer the experimental vaccine to pregnant women. Some people argued it was unethical not to offer pregnant women the chance to choose.

    This is such sad news. Frank Plummer was a terrific scientist. Interviewed him scores of times, always straight-shooting, funny when appropriate & generous with his time. Too soon.

    Dr. Frank Plummer has died, just after celebrating 40th anniversary of ground-breaking HIV research in Africa. Headed NML lab for years. He recently got experimental brain surgery to fight alcoholism. No confirmed cause of death.
