Just straight up admitting they’re going to declare their preferred candidates the winners regardless of the how the voting actually goes. Republicans no longer believe in democracy and they’re going to end it if they can.

First time I saw Chang An-Lo was in August of 2015. He had brought a group of men with clubs to intimidate high school and university students protesting at the Ministry of Education. I remember him screaming violent threats at young people. He seems much nicer on American TV.

Interesting to hear the White Terror of martial law-era Taiwan under Chiang Kai-shek's ROC regime described as "the Chinese version of Western democracy"

Wishful thinking from the next ⁦⁩ SecGen: "We do not believe that China would invade Taiwan, because China considers Taiwan as part of China, Why would it invade Taiwan? I believe that the Chinese leaders are wise and …they wd not do that,"

Just pointing the above out to clarify. It's great to see growing interest in Taiwan -- it's an important story and a fascinating country. But it's also vital that we tell the story as accurately and fairly as possible.

Inaccuracies in this graphic too. Taiwan was never a Portuguese colony, and the Spanish and Dutch partial colonizations of Taiwan did not alternate - they overlapped. Also, the Republic of China was not established in Taiwan in 1949, it was established in Nanjing, China, in 1912.

Saying China and Taiwan “split” is inaccurate. In 1949, facing annihilation at the hands of Mao's Communist revolution, the Republic of China fled to Taiwan, which it had seized in 1945. Mao's troops never managed to extinguish the ROC, which remains Taiwan's government today.

Taiwan and mainland China split during a civil war in 1949. Beijing claims the island nation as its own territory and has not ruled out using military force to take it. thestar.com/news/world/202

Among journalist respondents who received the HKJA survey only 22.9% responded, compared to 82.8% last year. Some of them said they fear the HKJA has come in the crosshairs of authorities & therefore they fear retribution for filling out the online form.
