Ever wondered how termites keep their colonies healthy? Want to read about them eating each other alive - and why this is GOOD for the colony? Check out my new paper in , co-authored by S. Meconcelli, R. Radek, and !

So heeeeey you know that letter about the German cluster, and the supposed asymptomatic transmission? It helps to talk to the Index Case before you decide she didn't have symptoms. Just, you know. Protip.

May be snow flies: Chionea. works on them...

They raise their legs very high when walking - not sure if that's an adaptation for walking on snow or if they do it for some other reason.

Loads of these flies, both males and females, marching around on the snow at today. It's about 1°C right now. Sciaridae?

Remember: getting your flu shot is one of the best things you can do in the face of a novel respiratory virus like 2019-nCoV. Preventing the spread of flu makes identification of 2019-nCoV cases easier and prevents your immune system from getting bogged down fighting flu.

The This Week in Virology continue coverage of the new coronavirus outbreak in China, as the number of cases increase dramatically and the virus begins person-to-person transmission in other countries.

I saw quite a few people opting not to shake hands, or refusing the cup during Communion. Given that we're in flu season & it's an older congregation, this is probably sensible... but I still shook hands and drank from the cup, because I didn't want to contribute to any panic.

So, there was definitely fear over the coronavirus in church today. The priest made a point of telling us that we can opt for non-physical greetings during the Peace, and that it's ok to participate in the Eucharist without drinking from the common cup.

It genuinely was not hard (one really basic ANOVA + one really basic linear regression, both done in R), but that didn't stop me stressing.

Finished my first stats assignment of the term (also the first stats assignment I have done since maybe 2003/4). Survived! It was multiple choice plus a few boxes to stick numbers into, based on some analysis that I had to do beforehand. Oh, and it was worth 10% of my grade 😱

Thanks to rapid and open data sharing by now includes the genome from one of the cases in Bavaria, Germany. It does not seem to group with any other sequences in our phylogeny.

For non-scientists, if you see something posted from a site called BioRxiv, have some skepticism. It could be a fantastic paper! (I've used it!)--but. The site is for preprints, which means they haven't undergone peer review yet. /1

Another lovely Bacillus spp from a shoe print. After 2 weeks the edges look like waterfalls spilling over.
