This piece cleverly addresses the hypocrisy in the fact that "for some politicians and voters, the difficulty of accessing these programs is partly the point"

When officials in an eastern Chinese city were told to root out “uncivilized behavior,” they were given a powerful tool to carry out their mission: facial recognition software. Among their top targets? People wearing pajamas in public.

more bad news: throughout history, no one has ever gotten back the leftover time promised by modern conveniences. I wrote about how an on-demand clean underwear app helped me unearth a huge time scam for 's quitting project

The privacy paranoid among us have long worried that all of our online photos would be scraped to create a universal face recognition app. My friends, it happened and it’s here:

NEW: Negah Hekmati's 5-year-old couldn't sleep and asked her mom to stop speaking Farsi because she feared being sent to jail. They're among more than 100 who were held up at the WA border in what the ACLU calls a violation of their 1st amendment rights

While reporting this story, I was attacked by a mob of pro-government women, who threw me to the floor and robbed me. Then someone broke my car windshield as I fled. Please read: Nicaragua Has a Simple Message for Protesters: Don’t - The New York Times

China’s police are hard at work building the largest domestic surveillance network the world has seen. The key is not so much tech as a lack of checks on police power. Hugely invasive networks of scanners and cameras now blanket most Chinese cities.

The power of this organization is fascinating. Hallmark had aired ads featuring same-sex couples getting married previously without an issue. Hallmark is thriving as a TV channel. But this petition still worked.

The forensic company that just bought one of the largest genealogy databases has a term for solving crimes through people's cousins, which I have not encountered before. That second or third cousin is a "molecular eyewitness."

Curt Rogers confirmed to me that about 20 minutes ago Verogen, a forensic company, took over as the new owner of GEDmatch, the genealogy database he co-founded about a decade ago, originally to help people find relatives.

At a conference, I randomly asked a group of people if they had any interesting DNA stories to tell me. The answer: "Yes, after a bone marrow transplant, all the DNA in my colleague's semen came from his donor." I agreed that counted as interesting.

When started writing about this in depth last summer, I compared it to Craigslist -- this weird, seemingly low-tech site that completely upended a whole industry. But instead of knocking print newspapers on their butts, it's privacy and law enforcement.
