The memorial remembers 151 lives that were lost on Christmas Eve in 1953 when a (volcanic mudflow) from destroyed a train bridge ~40 km from the summit. Heartbreaking. Pic of the most recent lahar in 2007 to pass by shown in the lower right pic.

Faced with a very difficult crossroads on our trip - to the left AND volcanoes to the right! Hmm, tricky decision, we opted left as two volcanoes surely must be better than one!

Some data from Australia on Geoscience uni enrolment from the up to 2017 States “no evidence of a strong correlation between Year 12 ES or E&ES candidature and enrolments in first year uni geoscience courses”

Also note (top right photo) the removal of the deposit at the basal contact in at least 4 places - can only put it down to the numerous geo groups passing by and having a scrape/sampling. One day there might be nothing left 😞. Please don’t destroy this amazing outcrop!

Selfie with the infamous ~1800 year old ‘’ from one of the most violent eruptions in the last 5000 years (VEI 6) - charcoal from trees burnt by pyroclastic flow (PDC) abundant here, at more than 20 km from Taupo caldera edge, more than 40 km from vents

Walking over the 1870 flow deposit of with beautiful lava levees on the edges of the deposit. The has erupted over 30 times in the last 100 years () and easy to spot the most recent lava deposits due to their darker colour and lack of vegetation.
