Girls are disproportionately harmed by schools closures in Afghanistan for the following reasons: 1) They are more likely to be expected to take on work in the home and care giving duties, including for siblings, leaving them without time to study.pic.twitter.com/5tARoblMLa

      2) Being out of school places girls at heightened risk of being forced into marriage, and other forms of gender-based violence. A third of girls in Afghanistan marry before age 18 and the law permits them to marry as early as 15.https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/04/20/will-afghanistan-follow-through-promise-end-child-marriage …

      3) Girls are at greater risk of not being able to return to re-opened schools because of factors including families being unable to afford school costs & pressure--especially in Taliban-controlled areas--to exclude girls from education as they get older.https://www.hrw.org/report/2017/10/17/i-wont-be-doctor-and-one-day-youll-be-sick/girls-access-education-afghanistan …

      4) Girls are less likely to have access to technology to study remotely, because of discriminatory gender norms in how resources are shared and views that girls should not use the internet.https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=914288759055647 …

      5) The pandemic is dramatically increasing poverty in Afghanistan and when families can't afford to educate all of their children, girls usually lose out. https://twitter.com/KateClark66/status/1316273372632887296?s=20 …pic.twitter.com/eLbv6TUTqN

Lack of water/sanitation facilities is a problem at most Afghan schools, but girls often study in even worse conditions--where Covid-19 prevention measures are near impossible. At this school in Kabul girls study in the tents; boys study in the buildings. https://www.hrw.org/video-photos/interactive/2017/10/17/war-girls-education …pic.twitter.com/dBFBlRTmla

As always, the most marginalized girls are the most at risk from Covid-19 and school closures. Girls who are internally displaced, have disabilities, are from ethnic groups facing discrimination and, of course, those who are poor are facing the most harm during the pandemic.pic.twitter.com/QesYizMWbe

Afghanistan is in crisis, but that doesn't mean there are no solutions. There are plenty. 1) Make girls' education a priority in Covid-19 response planning; 2) Do more to end gender-based violence, including child marriage; 3) make equality in education a legal requirement.pic.twitter.com/68LYSNARBK

      4) Teach children about gender equity; 5) Reach out to girls who don't come back to school, and re-engage them, even if they are married now; 6) Prioritize safely re-opening girls schools and use community-based education as a model to safely educate during the pandemic.pic.twitter.com/DRTDE5c822

      7) Do more to hire and retain female teachers; 8) Offer grants and scholarships to girls; 9) Make education truly free by providing all supplies and uniforms and cracking down on corruption in education; 10) Remove admin barriers that affected displaced children.pic.twitter.com/kAB4dVTG7i

There is so much for donors to do as well. Afghanistan simply can't afford many reforms without help. After 20 years of international involvement how can this country still be so poor? Donors have problems at home during Covid, but their responsibility to Afghanistan is not done.pic.twitter.com/ecEved9iD6
