Community service is an excellent alternative. Let people ‘pay’ the fines on an hourly basis in a way that adds value to the community. You might call it indentured servitude, but it’s far better than debtors’ prison.

Better yet why even that? What a person does in there own home shouldn't be a crime like smoking and drinking. As long as you aren't harming anyone why is it a crime? The only victim is you. We need alternatives to jail that focus on education, health, taxation, regulation.

Unfortunately drugs fuel crime. Crime gives government an excuse to do a lot of things they otherwise would be prevented from doing. It keeps people afraid & keeps government big and powerful a lot of people are making a lot of money enforcing the laws & running the prisons.
