@hbdchick "Science" is a) the disenchantment of the world b) scientific methodology as the One, True Perspective, above all others.
@RichardBSpencer well, i don't know what "a" means. =P but insofar as "b" gets man to mars, yes that's science and no it's not an ideology.
@hbdchick Ideology is something deeper than the slogans of regimes. I mean the cup that holds the water, the ideas that structure ideas.
@RichardBSpencer sure. and the ideology of science is the scientific method. but science, itself, is an enterprise. not an ideology.
@hbdchick
The ideology of science is something like,
*All existence can be categorized & manipulated so as to increase human happiness.*
@hbdchick
So, I guess "meh" is all the philosophic curiosity you can muster. ;)
@RichardBSpencer no. it's just my reaction to what i think is your misunderstanding of what science is. it's not just about categorization.
@hbdchick There is no thing. There are only eyes looking at things.
(Besides, "science" more or less deconstructed itself in the 20th c.)
@RichardBSpencer sorry. don't buy it. but i ain't no postmodernist anything. =P
@hbdchick
Also, were pre-"science" feats, like global exploration, more or less groundbreaking uses of tech than the moon-landing?
@RichardBSpencer sure. but no one was going to mars - or understanding genetics - in the 1400s. took science to do that.
@hbdchick
By "science," I'm not referring to knowledge or technology that "just works."
