Could you send us the reference for that differences between northen and southern Somalies? AGVP dataset shows that Somali presents systematic inbreeding.

the anthropologist i.m. lewis is your man. he spent much of his lifetime studying the somali and other pops in the horn of africa. here from Blood and Bone: The Call of Kinship in Somali Society (https://books.google.com/books?id=9fAjtruUXjEC …):pic.twitter.com/Au6EA5iFws

Yeah... I'm familiar with all his work, also that book. However I'm not sure how accurate his conclusions are... specially after analysing ROH in the Horn of Africa. Thank you very much thought! I appreciate it!
-
oh, right! did you (you guys) have samples from these northern groups he surveyed? he did mention somewhere (i think in Blood and Bones) how the practices could change, like during the wars of the '90s lotta these clans shifted to patrilineal cousin marriage...
-
...maybe the out-marriage practices he observed just happened to be favored in the time he happened to be there? a snapshot sort-of thing?
-
To tell you the truth I need to check again where the samples were collected. However ROH profiling analysis does not show that swift. Are northen somalies islamic?
-
yes, they are. which was one of lewis's points: he observed that there was a variety of marriage prerferences and practices between these islamic groups wrt to cousin marriage and concluded that islam was not the main factor pushing for endogamous practices in horn pops...
-
...but who knows how long they've been exogamous for? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ korotayev makes a similar argument, btw: that father's brother's daughter marriage in mena muslim societies is not really due to islam, but, rather, arabization.

So basically it differs with location.
-
within somalia/horn of africa you mean? differs with location, yeah, but between the different clans who reside in those locations.

Knowing that pastoralists favor cousin marriage, and why, is an highly esoteric “trend”.
