Those that live In Old Acoma live without running water, electricity, or plumbing. This lifestyle is by choice as the Acoma do not want to modernize Old Acoma too much. A road up to Old Acoma was built in the 1950s when a movie was filmed therepic.twitter.com/jDwoGSg8UM
One movie that was filmed at Acoma had its story placed in Africa. Because of this animals like elephants, zebras, and giraffes were brought in. This was the first time the Acoma had seen such animals. (I don’t know the name of the film.)
Acoma land has been used in many western films, ford truck commercials, and music videos. In several western films the Acoma were hired as extras.pic.twitter.com/GdbHqzCoPC
Today, the Acoma continue to practice their traditional ceremonies throughout the year. From personal point of view, it seems like a majority of the new Acoma generation is abandoning Catholicism in favor of traditional practices.pic.twitter.com/0Ml3IFytvn
Many Acoma artists also keep the art of pottery making alive after the practice was on the decline in the 20th century. An Acoma potter, Lucy Lewis (1890-March 12, 1992), is credited with its revival. Acoma pottery is known for it intricate geometric designs.pic.twitter.com/4Choxcpzkl
Today, the Acoma economy relies mainly on tourism. Acoma has many business operations two of the main ones being the Sky City Casino and Hotel and the Sky City Cultural Center and Haaku Museum.pic.twitter.com/QmlF2YqKt1
At Acoma we invite people to visit our traditional village, learn our history, and view our art and culture. If you would like to visit my tribe you can visit the cultural center website for details: http://www.acomaskycity.org/home.html
If you visit please be respectful of rules and regulations. Remember whose land you are on. And don’t forget to support local artists as selling their art is usually their only means of making money. And if you visit you can learn even more than what’s in my thread!
I used to work as a tour guide for the Sky City Cultural Center and learned most of my information from this job. I hope you learned a lot!
great thread! thanks! (^_^)
