Get yourself a group of amazing women you can text as often as you please about your accomplishments, failures & frustrations. But also about stats help, nail art, & burning down the patriarchy.

Importantly, we also show that this tradeoff is modulated by the controllability of rewards in the environment - w/ less controllability meaning a greater reliance on the Pavlovian predictor.

We propose a computational model that can explain the tradeoff btwn Pavlovian and instrumental action selection, where there's a balance btwn capturing patterns in the data (w/ a more complex instrumental predictor) while avoiding overfitting (w/ a simpler Pavlovian predictor)

The general idea is that the chicks are relying on a Pavlovian-bias to approach rewards, even though the most optimal action is to "avoid" the reward in order to obtain it (relying on instrumental learning).

A famous example of this is Hershberger's newborn chicks, who couldn't learn to walk away from food in order to obtain it (vs. walk toward it).

Humans and animals exhibit something called "Pavlovian misbehavior," where they tend to approach rewarding cues and avoiding punishing ones, even when those might not be the best actions to perform.

Just wanted revive this thread because I got DMCAed by the today. Since my website is hosted by github , I only had 24 hours to not only remove the file, but also scrub it from the repo history. Definitely had more important things to do today.

New paper with and Mia Charifson! High value gain associations acquired during reinforcement learning transfer across contexts and facilitate cognitive control for older adolescents. This profile emerges with age for gain learning, but not loss learning.

Really cool work by and colleagues! Spoiler alert: women work more hours than men regardless of what work looks like in their society, but when work becomes more commercial, men’s work time increases and minimizes the gender gap

New preprint from , , and I showing how value associations acquired during RL influence subsequent cognitive control during adolescence. Older teens enhance control and corticostriatal connectivity for high value gain cues, but don't differ for loss cues.
