If the National Cyber Security Centre did in fact launch these graphics following Rishi's announcement, it's certainly very stupid timing. But Rishi made his "retraining" remarks only a week ago (Tues 6 Oct) - so these ads were obviously in development well before then.
For clarification: the CyberFirst campaign has been running since at least 2015 - and it's this that's being referred to in the first tweet as a "campaign" (the overarching thing) https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/overview … The specific ad creative within this campaign is newer, age unknown.
Also for clarification: "Fake news" or misinformation often functions through real info being miscontextualised to lead the reader to false conclusions. NB Everyone believes that Sunak said "people in arts should retrain and find other jobs" But ITV's actually had to retract some of its framing of this interview. He's also "not not saying that", for sure, and this is where a politician's careful use of language clashes with the journalistic responsibility to explain the implications of their statement, too. It's not the easiest thing to report.
...because the strict facts of what he said vs. the information content of what he said vs. what makes a good story are all slightly different things here.
What worries me is an erosion of the public (and the media's) ability to tell the difference between these things. Or the erosion of the *desire* to tell the difference, if pretending it's all connected is a better story. Perhaps it was always already eroded, mind. Not decay.
Oh yes. It's still dreadful, mind you. Clarity used to be a watchword of the COI - has gone out of the window over the past 5+ years.
