(For those numbers-inclined, global primary energy use is around 6.8 zettajoules, while the oceans added 25.6 zettajoules of heat between 2018 and 2019).

CORRECTION: The gain in ocean heat content between 2018 and 2019 is actually 44 times larger than human primary energy use, not 4 times. I misread the primary energy use number as Mtoe rather than TWh... Thanks for the catch https://twitter.com/reprosci

In related news, can we just use joules for energy rather than Mtoe/TWh/MMBTUs/etc.? Energy unit conversion is the bane of my existence...

Zeke, thank you for posting. I have been led to believe that, prior to Argo, OHC was just an estimate. To what extent is that true (if any)?
-
All temperature records are estimates in a sense, as you are infilling regions between measurements. Prior to Argo we had fewer measurements, but there were still lots of XBTs and other sensor types used. Uncertainties are just larger in the pre-Argo era.

How much warmer is the water in °C on average compared to the reference value? 0.02°? 0.05°? Isn't that perhaps way within the error margin of the instruments and the measurement methodology? Just asking.
-
What layer of the water? The surface has warmed close to 0.8C since preindustrial, while the ocean at 2000m has warmed a tiny amount. Layers of the ocean in-between are somewhere in-between as heat transfers down pretty slowly.

It’s actually worse than that because the energy absorbed to melt 1kg of ice with no change in temperature is 80 x the energy require to raise that same 1kg of water be 1°C. So you would need to factor in all the extra sea ice that melted too.
-
Given the volume of water, I don’t imagine it would be a lot though.
