Stopping at a UK services on a sunny BH weekend is enough to make you get back in the car and keep driving until England is just a distant memory.

Could this be the day to get the summer duvet out? Too soon?

The temperature soared to 18 degrees today, cue an email warning local residents not to jump into the Thames to cool off. Only in this country would that be necessary.

Had a letter from an old friend of Dad’s which has the line “It was a time of hallucinogenic drug taking...”, a sentence I didn’t realise could make me cry. There does seem to be a pattern emerging here.

Looking at face in Teams meeting wondering when I grew a new mole, leading to silent panic. Checked in mirror afterwards. It was a cake crumb.

Getting a load of emails from companies asking if you’d like to opt out of receiving Father’s Day emails is probably worse than just getting Father’s Day emails.

Got my chipped tooth fixed (£23, thanks NHS), cleared my desk, ate lunch with most of my team, bought some new concealer in case I have to see people IRL regularly, got totally enraged by members of the public on multiple busy trains & now I’m EXHAUSTED.

Just got an email declaring “It’s shorts season!” while I’m wearing a heattech top and socks, winter coat and wool beanie.

All Along the Watchtower played outside, there was thunder & then brilliant sunshine, lots of lovely words (I committed to including “flatulence”), some Chopin & Debussy and then an outdoor picnic in the woods. It was pretty alright, as far as funerals go.

I was feeling quite happy with my neatly-trimmed funeral speech cards until Dan glanced over my shoulder and said “oh my God you’ve put the word flatulence in” like that was not allowed and now I’m worried.

It is terrible working in publishing, being the daughter of a pedant and finding yourself saying ‘there should be an accent on the ù’ for your Dad’s funeral order of service, like anyone else would notice or care.

The strangest playlist you might ever have to put together is the one for your Dad’s funeral. But fucking hell it’s going to be a CORKER.

very shocked and startled, like a kitten who has farted in the Night, to hear that No One Is Talking About This made the Women’s Prize shortlist. huge congratulations to the other nominated writers and all the writers on the longlist as well. and to baileys, for being so creamy.

So today I discovered that my Dad’s death was going to a coroner’s inquest and that I got a vaccination cancellation slot for tomorrow. Swings and roundabouts.

Remembering the time we had show and tell in primary school and I took in a postcard of a penguin from London Zoo, with the strict instruction to say “This is a King penguin and my Dad says he’s ‘king stupid.” The teacher looked surprised.

Lost my Paparello yesterday. It’s been a rough ride. My heart goes out to anyone who’s experienced the pain of losing a parent and all those who’ve dealt with loss during this pandemic. It’s a good job Lidl has got a special offer on tissues this week, that’s all I’ll say.

One crust of sourdough. A tin of sardines. Some dried pasta. Dinner of champions (made even better with a little lemon zest, parsley and chilli flakes).
