    On January 1-12, 1864 severe Arctic cold persisted in Arkansas. From what records exist during this time in the Civil War, it appears the coldest readings were on the 1st with -16 at Fayetteville, Little Rock & Van Buren. On the 2nd the Arkansas River was frozen over.

    On this day in 1949 an F4 tornado hit Warren, killing 55. This tied the 1898 Fort Smith tornado for the deadliest single tornado to hit in the state of Arkansas. There were six other tornadoes in Arkansas that day.

  5. On this date in 1893...there were four hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin. It would be over a century before this would happen again in 1998. One of these storms eventually made landfall near Savannah as a Cat 3 hurricane on August 27 - the Great Sea Islands Hurricane.

    November 27th, 1701 - Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, physicist, and mathematician was born on this day. He founded the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory in 1741, and in 1742 proposed the Celsius temperature scale which bears his name.

    This date in 1955, Hurricane Ione made landfall near Morehead City, NC w/winds over 100mph. 16.63" fell at Maysville. 40 blocks of New Bern, were underwater@ one point. 7 people died & total damage was $88 million. Ione was the 3rd hurricane to cross Ern in 5 wks

    An interesting bit of personal . On my last day of school in 4th grade, a tornado warning was issued. I remember it being absolutely terrifying, despite no confirmed tornado. Being a wx nerd I was curious, so I did extensive research, and I found the warning. 1/2

    10 years ago was the Super Tuesday Outbreak. I was in the eight grade when this happened. This event and many others like this drove my interest into weather.
