    Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I don't often see a female Downy woodpecker (I think) with wings outstretched like this.🙂

  5. This year we saw our regular breeding pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers bring 3 new young to our garden. Then, suddenly, all 5 disappeared. We don’t know what happen but are relieved that at least one has now returned. Hopefully we’ll see more now Winter approaches.

    I see many Red Bellied Woodpeckers in the forests near my home. They are fast moving, busy birds! 🌻

    Today I heard, captured, and saw (in that order) my first Pileated Woodpecker! Both sexes have a red crest, but on females (like this one) it’s centered on the top of their head - on males, the red would extend down to the base of the bill.

    Red-naped sapsucker parent at its nesting cavity. I found this nest a few days ago thanks to the loud, begging babies.

    Yes Hugh, the Pileated Woodpeckers are amazing, I have been lucky to have photographed them a couple of times up close. Here is a shot that shows when they are pecking, a membrane covers the eye to protect if from flying wood chips. How cool is that?

    Morning, "Peekaboo Woodpecker" While out in search of squirrels, this Red Bellied Woodpecker decided to tease me with a game of peekaboo.

  18. Downy and Hairy look so similar that it was long thought they were close relatives. But science has revealed they’re more different than meets the eye!

    Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker in my yard, late evening, was a documented first for my yard, and he has since come back a few times, he prefers right before sunset..in low light lol!
