Butcher's broom (ruscus aculeatus), a surprise find, & a first for me, on a walk near Goring, 28/1. I quickly discovered that those spines on the 'leaves' (they're actually cladodes, which are thick & flattened modified stems) are stiff & sharp!

I’ve been so happy to see the first primroses in bloom this week! Did you know that Primula vulgaris has two different types of flowers borne on separate plants, pin-eyed (top right) and thrum-eyed (bottom) which is an adaptation to promote cross pollination.

An unfortunately shy Radnor lily (Gagea bohemica) for this week. This early-flowering Mediterranean plant is known on only one site in the UK and although abundant there, very few individuals produce flowers. The second picture shows the abundant grass-like leaves

Once I would have called this a violet, later a dog violet. Now with help from ’s photo guide I’m hoping tiny sepals and unbranched veins at heart mean I’ve found early dog violet. Sorry for bad pictures due to wind and low light

This dandelion was soaking up some winter sun ☀️ Dandelion comes from the French ‘dent de lion’, meaning lion’s tooth, a reference to those pointily lobed leaves. I think they look more like shark fins but aileronderequin doesn’t have quite the same ring to it

Archetypal ruderal; Red Dead-nettle, Lamium purpureum from Pembroke, Pembs for this week. A nice burst of colour to counteract some drab weather.
