    I don’t have a problem with word count as some students constantly look for the “easy out” and need a floor before they reach for the ceiling. But you should never make it the sole focus

    If you enjoy free writing in your classroom, you should try round robin free writes where students have the opportunity to write extensions on peer's writing. I have gotten great responses on this and the kids love to share!

    I agree! I believe that getting the students to get their thoughts down is the most important piece. That's why I think that the students having a weekly journal to free write in helps them to express themselves without form holding them back.

    Are non-ELA teachers wary about incorporating writing because they don't feel it's a strength of theirs? If so, I say, keep it short and easy! Quickwrites help kids put into words what they've learned. A tough task for some, but helpful in expression and key vocabulary.

    I'm a sucker for metacognition, Telannia. And, come to think of it, meta- anything. Pulling back curtains to reveal, to the best of our ability, seemingly hidden processes for purposes of teaching/learning brings me outsized joy. Writing=excellent vehicle for this!

    A1) I am studying special ed at school right now so I don't have my own classroom yes, but being in a self-contained room, I have all the disciplines together. I try to incorporate writing in each lesson that I teach because it is so important.

    Literacy is a fundamental skill in history study, thus writing is a big deal. I tend to focus on effective sourcing and writing as a form of voice- taking a position, advocating it, using effective support to back the position.
