It's alive! I wrote an article on Jeff Epstein, the MIT Media Lab, gee-whiz demos that don't work in real life, and the problem that unites them: Sugar Daddy Science.

Live-tweet of massive faculty meeting re: Epstein and the institutional lifestyle that allowed him to play such a large role (or any role) in the Media Lab. Big moment of reckoning for .

People sometimes ask if I miss the US, or the US academic system. If this type of nonsense is what they're talking about...no, no I do not. This to me is just as appalling + indicative of systemic moral rot as MIT's Epstein scandal.

It's an unfortunate trend in both science and the tech world. Flash over substance.

  5. You did an excellent job on this article, . "How do we stop sugar-daddy science? The only long-term solution is to bring back federal funding so researchers can stop relying on donations from the beneficiaries of widening inequality." <------!!!!

Looks like academia is getting a long overdue wakeup call. has been going on for decades, and all major universities play the game.

When you take money from private donors, you are prettymuch required to please them, matching their agenda. This is a leading cause of untrue claims, faulty projects, and misleading information.

Hoo boy, in the context of grifters and funding, the well meaning, and the true believers, does this thread resonate with the discussion around in other parts of my feed

The great at it again with a killer article in on : "The problem is, blank checks never come without strings. Something’s always exchanged: access, status, image. That’s where sugar-daddy science comes in"

"The pure pursuit of science, freed from worldly concerns like politics and money, is a seductive illusion. In reality, it ends up attracting the very worst people, like Jeffrey Epstein."

Thank you both for being proactive and thoughtful about this. As a fellow alum I want to see handle this with transparency and I struggle to see how an OGC investigation accomplishes that. We need out of the academy, yesterday.

„Science stops being a tool to achieve things people need [...] and becomes a fashion accessory. If the labs are sleek, the demos look cool, and they both reflect the image the donor wants, then mission accomplished. Nothing needs to actually work.“

This thread is incredible. The phrase and the assessment that: Epstein didn't just wreck girls' lives. He didn't just try to popularize eugenics. He derailed science. Thank you

Whole thread is incredibly relevant and interesting. I r/t from here because this is where it gets v v real and scary.

We don't talk about it much, because we are part of the problem. provides strong incentives to hype our work, and university press releases are a place where we can do so without fear of repercussions. It's all wink-and-nod, "You know those press offices!"

it's so true, other than the part about good training it's ... hard to teach the scientific method with sham research which is a really important reason to not do .
