    montmorillonite (purple in this edx map) is small, true, but important in lots of subduction zone faults. It's nasty as it can help earthquake propagation due to its low energy dissipation. Wherever you find it, it lubricates (if wet). VOTE FOR IT!

    I'm voting because it is an important product of aqueous alteration found on water-rich asteroids. Clay minerals get a poor look-in for popularity (I suspect), but they have important industrial applications and complex structures

    Late to the party but has a surface area of ~800 m2 per gram !!!! Yes that’s a S.A. of 2 basketball pitches for 1 g of this incredible member of - no wonder its one of the most reactive minerals. In comparison, fluorite’s paltry S.A. is ~1 m2/g. No contest.
