    I stayed late at work tonight (sometimes needs must) and, unbeknown to me, so did a colleague. On their way out, they saw my car and called my mobile to check in and see if I was ok. These little gestures mean so much – maybe even more since acting up.

    Not sure I totally agree that with leadership comes greater autonomy. There are still massive constraints on you as a leader... just different ones. As a leader, you are *constantly* scrutinised and you are highly accountable, but that’s what you sign up to.

    How can you lead a school if you don’t know what’s going on in a classroom? Is a pilot given autonomy? No. They are trusted but still checked regularly to ensure it’s safe. Why not teachers?
