  1. 1st Bway audition was told to lose 11 lbs. Yes...”eleven”. Lost 20 lbs & they told me to “lose 5 more”. Had that convo off and on for 20+ yrs until I finally went “fuck this shit”, gained 40 lbs & now I’m a series regular on TV. 🤷‍♀️

    Started cos I applied for a job at a black magazine & got rejected. Been rejected from EVERY journalism job I’ve applied 4. Never secured a journo role but ran a crowdfund 2 turn B.B. in2 a membership platform & ended up on Forbes 30 under 30.

  4. I was also rejected from the Warner Bros writing program and now I’m running a WB show 😀

  5. 12 yrs of writing 100s of rejections At least 20 “Your world is great, but do your characters have to be black?” That agent who told me “Yeah, no one’s interested in that demographic..” DEATHLESS comes out spring 2020. It was a significant 6 figure deal.

    Spent a year & a half and 18 drafts developing a film with a major studio. After painstakingly crafting something that ticked every box we were asked for, they decided they didn't want it anymore. So we thought f**k it, and made it ourselves.

    Once in an audition to play an alien I read in my Welsh accent. After the reading I was asked if I could do any other accents. I said “yes. Which space accent would you like” I didn’t get the part. As it turns out the accent of space was English. Of course.

    A fellow playwright said they didn’t get my whole “geek aesthetic” and rejected me for a grant I desperately needed to survive on. Another called my writing “immature” and didn’t understand why I couldn’t just write my play “normal.” That play was .

    My first book was rejected by 14 publishers before finally finding a home. After 2 or 3 or 5 you say okay... After 10 you're like well.... And then you pick yourself up and just keep moving forward.

    200 rejections for the first book in the Anita Blake series. Guilty Pleasures written in late 1980s, finally published 1994. Serpentine the 26th novel in the series is #3 on the Times List and #4 on USAToday in its first week.

  13. When I started in comics, I was told by an editor they wouldn’t know how to market my style...and left it there. But I kept at it and 71 covers later here I am.

  15. I don't want to shame specific people or companies, but I'll just say a lot of what I get praise for now was rejected for YEARS. If you keep at it, you will last longer than the gatekeepers who don't align with your mind. Keep creating. Hone your craft.

    20 years ago, I was a stand up, and I opened for the hip hop group Gravediggaz at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. I came out, and within 2 minutes I was booed so loudly I couldn’t hear myself speak. I was contracted to do 40 minutes.

    Cameron wouldn’t produce my Free Willy musical. Including such hits as ‘where is my willy?’, ‘my willy needs water’, ‘willy is my best friend’. It would have changed the musical theatre world. Gutted.

  18. One year I was the lead in readings/workshops of five new musicals, I ended up getting recast in all of them! Xanadu came back to me after Jane Krakowski couldn’t do it. 😊
