This deep-sea mud star, Dytaster insignis, is a species which occurs in the true abyss (8,250-11,580 ft)! They're commonly collected with disks engorged with mud because swallow the sediment in order to devour potential snails and clams.

First Time Seen Alive: Sthenaster emmae! This species was hypothesized to be a coral predator, based on fragments found in its gut, but now we have solid evidence of this species feeding on a primnoid octocoral!

Here’s a close up of a leather star I photographed
@AquariumPacific. Unlike other sea stars, this species does not have spines. Instead, it has several rows of papulae on each of its five arms, which are small sacks used for respiration.#seastar#leatherstar#PhotoArkpic.twitter.com/mnOU8qy8Ep -
