    This deep-sea mud star, Dytaster insignis, is a species which occurs in the true abyss (8,250-11,580 ft)! They're commonly collected with disks engorged with mud because swallow the sediment in order to devour potential snails and clams. 📽️NOAA

    First Time Seen Alive: Sthenaster emmae! This species was hypothesized to be a coral predator, based on fragments found in its gut, but now we have solid evidence of this species feeding on a primnoid octocoral! 📽️NOAA

    There's no such thing as personal space under the sea... Having your face fondled by the roving arm of a Pacific blood (Henricia leviuscula) is all in a day's routine, as this white dendronotus (Dendronotus albus) knows too well.

  9. Here’s a close up of a leather star I photographed . Unlike other sea stars, this species does not have spines. Instead, it has several rows of papulae on each of its five arms, which are small sacks used for respiration.
