    I don’t have any research funding or a lab, but needed to curate and store fossil insect cocoons for a study. When Valentine’s Day candy went on sale, containers worked perfectly for this. (First eat candy. Then do science.)

    Don’t want to spend the $$$ on hyperflasks? Use 15cm tissue culture dishes instead!

  11. : we cut up foam water noodles to plug the ends of our sediment core sections (which are stored in split PVC pipes). And we use nail polish to seal microscope slides!

    Hair dryers and scrounged silica desiccation packets are essential for drying out & troubleshooting cranky geophysics field gear. When you live in a temperate rainforest, all the tarps still won’t be enough.

    We use white business cards to see UV laser beams (they fluoresce), and even use Polaroid film to capture laser spots/beam patterns
