PhD success = Genuine effort - (bad luck + toxic environment + naysayers + imposter syndrome + personal flaws + other people's drama) + (network + good mentors + good colleagues + good luck + opportunities) What did I miss?

When it comes to choosing a grad program, the people are just as important (if not more so) than the research. The mentoring you receive and relationships you build during grad school are key to launching your career, and the research is a vehicle for that.

When you start a you are learning how to do research. You don't know how to do it so ask questions. Lots of questions. If you already knew how to do a PhD there wouldn't be any point in doing it. You are doing it to learn.

Doing a PhD is an incredible privilege. I get paid to think about nature every day. I have job security for six years. I've met amazing, supportive peers. It's also crippled my mental health in a way I never expected. All of these things can be true.

With all the negativity lately, I just want to say I enjoy my PhD. It can be hard and stressful, but I cherish the privilege of working as a scientist and meeting amazing collaborators.
