#Perihelion! Today marks the time in the Earth's orbit where the planet is closest to the sun. On July 4, 2020, the Earth will reach#Aphelion, when the planet is farthest away from the sun.pic.twitter.com/m3E3TZ3Oa2

Today Earth is closer to the Sun than it will be any other time in the 21st century--8,616 km closer than at last year's
#Perihelion, and 2,019 closer than at next year's. http://astropixels.com/ephemeris/perap2001.html …pic.twitter.com/hdYwB5Hw1C

For a body orbiting the
#Sun, the point of least distance is the perihelion. Today,#Earth reaches the#perihelion, so its center is about 147,098,070 km (91,402,500 mi) from the Sun's center. According to#Kepler's 2° law, Earth's#velocity reachs its maximum at#perihelion. pic.twitter.com/09qh9Is0hd -

Just took a pic of the sun on the day of perihelion, so I can compare it with one taken with same scope and camera on 29th June (close to but not exactly aphelion). Voila! You can see difference in apparent size quite clearly!

In a few hours, you will be closer to the Sun than you've ever been, and ever will be.. Earth reaches
#perihelion. At 23:49 PST, it will be only 147,091,143 km from the Sun (center-to-center). It will not come closer this millennium. http://orbitsimulator.com/gravitySimulatorCloud/simulations/1578186882157_peri2020.html …pic.twitter.com/i46Bi1CJva

Happy Perihelion! Earth will reach its closest point to the Sun for 2020 on January 4 or 5, depending on your time zone. Astronomers call this celebrated point in Earth’s elliptical orbit around the Sun
#perihelion, from the Greek roots peri meaning near & helios meaning Sun. pic.twitter.com/3g2fIBIebb

The Earth makes it closest approach to the Sun (in the Northern Hemisphere) during the winter time, on January 5 at 2:47 am EST.

Coming this weekend, the earth will reach its closest point in its annual trip around the sun.

By the time of
#perihelion,#Rosetta had already spent a year at the#comet and would keep studying#67P for another year

A
#comet's activity reaches peak intensity around#perihelion and in the weeks that follow, releasing large amounts of gases & dust into space, giving rise to spectacular jets and even causing sizeable chunks like this to leave the surface

Four years ago today, our
#Rosetta mission witnessed Comet#67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko making its closest approach to the Sun. These images
were collected just a few hours before the comet reached #perihelion#OTD

Happy Perihelion Earthlings! Today, Earth is at its closest approach to the Sun: 147 million kilometers from that big ball of plasma lighting up our world.

Earth And Sun Snuggle Up:
Earth’s path around the sun is not a perfect circle
At #perihelion, Earth is ~91.4 million miles (147.1 million km) from the sun
At #aphelion, Earth is ~94.5 million miles (152.1 million km) from the sun
Difference is ~3 million miles

Tilt trumps distance! Happy Perihelion! This is our closest approach to the sun; if you’re cold, blame our planet’s axial tilt. :)
