Good question from asking how to make old buildings smarter in a secure manner. Definitely desire to gain some performance and efficiency benefits in old buildings. Answer is that’s it’s new network gear so need to secure the infrastructure.

  15. 31. sij

Success in smart buildings is for IT departments to be involved early; converged network is important but creates a bunch of problems; need to work together at the design and implementation stage.

  16. 31. sij

Building automation systems are exposed, easy to access, and instructions are readily available. And then can pivot to another system because of improper isolation.

  17. 31. sij

Basically threat actors can target buildings just like other assets. Use access to disrupt building activities, target occupants, target equipment.

  18. 31. sij

Data is lucrative; can be used for bad or good. Monetize it, criminal activities; data vs intelligence. Smart building data is a target, if not stealing, maybe for ransom because it is needed.

  19. 31. sij

Risk of power consumption data used to determine occupancy for e.g. theft; some vendors leave data collection decision to installers and operators. Just washing their hands of the responsibility?

  20. 31. sij

Question re the ability for an occupant or a resident of a smart building to opt out of data collection; response is “no, not a chance in hell”. Other response was it isn’t personally identifiable. But some companies want that data too, worth a lot of money
